John Lennon...a Christian?

The Gospel According to the Beatles by Steve Turner reveals that John Lennon at one point considered himself a Christian and had corresponded with Oral Roberts, among others.

are you serious..

He felt organized religion did more harm than good. In "Imagine," he sang about a better world where there was "no religion." In his song "God" he sang "God is a concept, By which we can measure, Our pain, I'll say it again, God is a concept, By which we can measure, Our pain" He was not a Christian. He would not dare to label himself such a disgusting name. fuck you people.

John Lennon... a Deist?

John Lennon - Grow Old With Me lyrics

Grow old along with me
The best is yet to be
When our time has come
We will be as one
God bless our love
God bless our love

Grow old along with me
Two branches of one tree
Face the setting sun
When the day is done
God bless our love
God bless our love

Spending our lives together
Man and wife together
World without end
World without end

Grow old along with me
Whatever fate decrees
We will see it through
For our love is true
God bless our love
God bless our love

He felt organized religion

He felt organized religion did more harm than good. In "Imagine," he sang about a better world where there was "no religion." In his song "God" he sang "God is a concept, By which we can measure, Our pain, I'll say it again, God is a concept, By which we can measure, Our pain" He was not a Christian. He would not dare to label himself such a disgusting name. fuck you people. boediger

Actually yes.

Boediger's obviously not a big Lennon fan. Lennon did in fact consider himself a Christian for a time at least. He became a regular viewer of a religious TV program (PTL or 700 club or something like that) and even corresponded with the host. He even wrote some unreleased songs that have very obvious religious messages in them. I've heard some of them. The only person connected to Lennon I know of that disputes this is Yoko.. and well, we all know how trustworthy she is.

Lennon: eternally lost in eternity

Lennon said he wasn't sure whether rock and roll or Christianity would "go first." We do know conclusively, however, that Lennon managed to "go first." Do you listen to any popular singer from the 19th Century; can you even name one? In a century hence, no one will listen to Lennon, and his name will be no more more relevant to 22nd Century man than Rudy Valley or Al Johlson is to the present 21st Century man. Voltaire, possessed of a far superior mind than Lennon's, stated "In twenty years, Christianity will be no more." Within years of his death, the Geneva Bible Society was using his house to print Bibles. Perhaps, everyday since Lennon's death, atheists in hell make his aquaintance and add a truly novel meaning to the lyrics "Imagine there's...no hell below us."

you people who quote his

you people who quote his songs imagine or god or the '66 interveiw obviously arent looking much into this subject as your quoting older things he said...he did as erm...anonymous said did consider himself a christian and was even seen going to church and watched christian television.

Christians

"Forgive them Lord, for they do not know what they are doing" -Jesus Christ Try listening to church services. Think about where you are going. Hell. Just listen. If you don't believe then, just forget. Plus I heard he was a Christian, beacame an atheist, and then became a Christian. But who knows? Ask.com could've been wrong. If it was, Lennon is burning in pitch black fire. That could be you.

See, it's that form of

See, it's that form of hostility toward those who may differ in view that causes hatred. Where is your sense of tolerance? Such hated is rampant in organized religion, especially towards other religions. This lack of tolerance is the largest contributor of so called "Holy Wars." The hated fails to stop there, even in differing factions of the same religion there is a form of tension. To organize religion is to divide religion. Organized religion creates a system in which God is to be worshiped, but perhaps we should all step back, form our own beliefs and learn how to worship God in our own way.

Don't you see the message is his lyrics?

On multiple comments, people have spoke of how John Lennon is now in Hell. This fixation on Heaven and Hell is causing people to lose sight of the moment and of humanity. When he spoke of imagining heaven or hell, he was not claiming hell does not exist, but to not look to these to guide our path. Do not focus on Jesus or God, but focus on the teachings. The concept of eternal reward and punishment is a selfish endeavor for it would appear as though many people demand some form of gratification to do anything. It is better to do good without thought of reward than to do good because one feels one must. We have to look away from eternity and look to how we can better humanity. My plea to you is do not look toward eternal gratification or punishment, but do good and do what is right because it is the good and right thing to do.

RE John Lennon not a christian?

Don't be so niave, how can you make those comments without proper knowledge on the subject? I was raised a christian and still believe in God, and if you had looked into it you would have realised John was not an anti-christ. What he meant, and if you had searched this properly you'd have realised too, was that in that day and age The Beatles had a bigger influence on the youth than did Jesus and the church. He never stated it was a good thing, in fact quite the contrary. He stated "I’m one of Christ’s biggest fans. And if I can turn the focus on the Beatles on to Christ’s message, then that’s what we’re here to do." I think the problem with some christians is that they are too uptight and walk around with eyes closed and don't do what they preach, merely criticise. In future don't jump to any conclusions without knowing the facts. Peace x
